Chemically Vapor Deposited Ysz for Thermal Amd Environmental Barrier Coatings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) has been used as a thermal/environmental barrier coating for gas turbine engine blades. Current methods of fabrication include air plasma spraying (APS) and electron-beam physical vapor deposition (EB-PVD). The APS technique results in a coating that loses effectiveness with thermal cycling. The EB-PVD technique deposits a columnar microstructure which accommodates thermal expansion mismatch, but the process is capital intensive and also line-of-sight. A technique currently being investigated is chemical vapor deposition (CVD), which can reduce the need for costly capital equipment, is simpler, and can deposit high quality coatings on hidden surfaces. Further, CVD coatings can act also as a top coat to seal an EB-PVD coating from ingress of damaging salts from the combustion environment. In our continuing work, YSZ has been successfully deposited on α-Al2O3 and the turbine blade material (Mar-M247) with reasonable agreement between modeled and experimental results.

Modeling of Chemical Vapor Deposited Zirconia for Thermal Barrier and Environmental Barrier Coatings
Thermal and environmental barrier coatings are important components of current and future energy systems. Such coatings – applied to hot, metallic surfaces in combustors, heat exchanger and turbines – increase the allowable operating temperature and increase the efficiency of the energy system. Because of its low thermal conductivity and high thermal expansion yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) i...

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) based on Yttria-stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) deposited by the solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS) technique have been claimed to exhibit superior durability compared to conventional plasma spraying and even electron-beam physical vapor deposition. This has been attributed to the interesting features, like vertical cracks, nanosized pores, and fine splats that are...

Attempts to increase the gas temperature within gas turbine engines are driving the development of thermal barrier coatings that reduce superalloy component oxidation rates by disrupting thermal transport processes. Novel metal–ceramic multilayer’s combining thin metal layers with low thermal conductivity oxide ceramics offer a potential approach for impeding both the radiative and conductive t...
متن کاملErosion, Corrosion and Erosion-Corrosion of EB PVD Thermal Barrier Coatings
Electron beam (EB) physical vapour deposited (PVD) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have been used in gas turbine engines for a number of years. The primary mode of failure is attributed to oxidation of the bondcoat and growth of the thermally grown oxide (TGO), the alumina scale that forms on the bondcoat and to which the ceramic top coat adheres. Once the TGO reaches a critical thickness the T...
